RF Microneedling vs. Microneedling

Should You Choose RF Microneedling or Microneedling?

Microneedling has become one of the more popular treatments to increase the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. This makes the skin look smoother and more youthful.

However, which do you choose: traditional microneedling, or technology with radio frequency (RF) abilities? Comparing RF microneedling vs. microneedling starts with one distinction: added heat.

At Inspirations Med Spa, we use MicroPen EVO microneedling to encourage skin renewal without radiofrequency energy. For suitable patients, this approach addresses texture concerns without adding a heat-based aspect to treatment.

How MicroPen EVO Works

Our MicroPen EVO technology uses fine needles to create controlled punctures in the skin. This prompts a healing response that supports collagen production. Collagen gives skin structure, so gradual remodeling can soften the appearance of acne scars and improve texture.

We apply topical numbing, select the needle depth, and move the pen across the treatment area. Each appointment uses a new, sterile needle cartridge. The FDA has cleared MicroPen EVO to improve facial acne scars in adults 22 and older.

Most appointments take 30 to 60 minutes. We discuss numbing, aftercare, and upcoming plans before treatment. Gentle cleansing, moisturizer, and sun protection support recovery while your skin settles.

What Radiofrequency Adds

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling combines micro-injuries with energy that heats tissue beneath the surface. That additional heat stimulates deeper collagen remodeling, supporting improvements in scars, wrinkles, and skin firmness.

However, for some patients this could risk an unintended loss of facial fat (called “lipoatrophy). Patients with already lean faces, facial hollowness, or age-related volume loss may find the addition of RF to their microneedling to be too aggressive.

Also, if a patient has more prevalent melasma issues or deeper skin tones, they’ll want to be cautious about adding RF energy to their treatment. The heating may cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and actually increase the appearance of melasma.

Devices, needle depths, energy settings, and techniques vary for each treatment. When weighing RF microneedling vs. microneedling, ask which system a practice uses and why its approach would better suit your concerns. Added energy doesn’t guarantee better results for every patient.

Why Choose Non-RF Treatment?

MicroPen EVO may appeal to you if your priorities include:

  • Improving acne scars or uneven texture.
  • Encouraging collagen without added RF heat.
  • Starting with an approach matched to your current concerns.

Skipping RF means avoiding exposure to that heat source. In October 2025, the FDA warned about reports of serious complications with certain RF microneedling uses. This doesn’t mean every RF procedure causes harm, but it reinforces the need for careful screening and trained hands.

An Inspirations Med Spa provider uses our Halo laser on a patient's forehead. They have chosen this therapy as part of their treatment plan than included choosing our MicroPen EVO microneedling after discussing RF microneedling vs. microneedling.

When Lasers Deserve Consideration

Our laser options address different tissue layers and concerns. HALO laser resurfacing pairs surface renewal with deeper collagen remodeling. Its ablative wavelength removes tiny columns of surface tissue, while its non-ablative wavelength heats deeper tissue. This combination can improve wrinkles, texture, and acne scars.

MOXI offers a less intensive option for uneven tone and texture. It doesn’t deliver the same depth of remodeling as HALO. For tightening goals, we assess how much skin has loosened, rather than promising a lift from every resurfacing treatment.

HALO often requires 3 to 7 days of recovery, so a busy week may influence timing. Lasers also use heat and carry risks. We explain those tradeoffs instead of presenting them as automatically safer than RF.

Microneedling FAQs

These answers connect treatment choices with your skin and schedule.

Will I need recovery time?

Yes, both approaches can cause redness, swelling, and tenderness. Recovery depends on the device, settings, and your skin. Allow time for healing before events, and follow aftercare guidance.

How soon will my skin improve?

Collagen develops gradually, so changes appear over weeks and months, rather than overnight. A series of treatments may help address your concerns more completely. We discuss realistic expectations and review your response before recommending additional sessions.

Can I receive treatment with active acne?

We may postpone needling over inflamed breakouts or an infection. During your consultation, we review current acne, medications, and healing history before selecting an approach. Treating scars and treating active breakouts require different strategies.

Does my skin tone affect the choice?

Yes, your skin tone and any previous pigment changes will help guide treatment selection. MicroPen EVO has clearance for facial acne scars across all skin types in adults 22 and older. We still assess individual risks before treatment.
